Your Options - About Mausoleum Entombment

A mausoleum is a special building for the purpose of entombment. It is blessed by the Bishop and located within a cemetery. A mausoleum contains crypts designed to hold one or more caskets.

A mausoleum may also have columbaria - wall niches for cremation urns.

The Diocese of Hamilton has six mausolea (three in Burlington, one in Guelph, one in Brantford and one in Stoney Creek). Each mausoleum has a chapel area where memorial Masses can be held. For more information about the mausolea of The Catholic Cemeteries, go to the Directory of Cemeteries.

Process

When entombment in a mausoleum is the selected form of committal, the location of the crypt is part of the decision-making. There are different prices for different locations within the mausoleum. The front of the crypt (the part that is visible) may be made of marble, granite or bronze and each is also priced differently. Our family counsellors will explain the different crypt options available.

Entombment in a crypt normally takes place directly following a funeral service or Mass. The Rite of Committal takes place at the chapel in the mausoleum. The casket is usually inserted into the crypt once the mourners have departed. The crypt is then sealed and, at a later date, inscribed.
